The Future You Review by Apple Tech Talker

It’s no secret that Apple has been interested in finding ways to use their products to help keep us healthy. With their introduction of the Health app for iPhone, users now had a way to track many important health indicators.

Then, in 2015, with the introduction of the Apple Watch, Apple made it easier than ever to track daily activity, monitor heart rate, take an EKG on your wrist, and even call for help if you take a bad fall or are in a serious auto accident.

And in July 2022 (updated in September 2022), Apple released a white paper titled, “Empowering people to live a healthier day” (you can read the full report here.)

But Apple is not the only one looking at how technology can help us stay health. If you are interested in learning more about what the future may hold for healthcare, check out a new book by Harry Glorikian called; The Future You – How Artificial Intelligence Can Help You Get Healthier, Stress Less, and Live Longer. Brick Tower Press (November 30, 2021), 292 pages, ISBN: 1883283825.

The Future You is not a technical book. You won’t find a lot of technical jargon intended for programmers or data architects. It also is not a medical book, needing a lot of scientific knowledge or a chemistry background.

Instead, The Future You is a well written, easy to read journey that describes where we are today in technological health care, and where we may be headed in the future. It takes the reader on a journey into how technology can meld with medicine to make us all healthier.

The Forward, written by Dr. Bob Arnot says;

“AI is all around us. Self-driving cars. Smart personal assistants—think Siri, Cortana, or Google Now—or Alexa, Amazon’s cloud-based voice service that is available on literally hundreds of millions of devices. Voice-to-text. Manufacturing robots. Facial recognition software. Security surveillance. Automated financial investing and social media monitoring. Smart homes that control themselves when their owners are out of town. The list is endless.

“All of the above make life easier for us. But in this new book by Moneyball Medicine author/podcaster Harry Glorikian, the spotlight is on how AI can (and will, and in many cases already does) make us healthier.

Our Thoughts on the Book

We don’t want to give away any of the details in the book, as we think it’s important you read it yourself and draw your own conclusions.

The book is well laid out. In the earliest chapters, you learn a little about what AI is, how it works and why it is important. You won’t find any real computer code and it is not the intent of the book to teach you how to use AI.

Instead, the author gives you a general understanding of the concept of AI, with just enough detail to help the reader connect the technology with the impact on medicine.

Some of what is discussed is not new information and you may at times think that the medical advances being discussed are now common place and thinking, you already know that.

But we actually appreciate the format and style of the writing. Not everyone who reads this book may be following the latest trends in technology. For them, this book is a great introduction to where we are today and were we are headed tomorrow. For the rest of us, the early chapters are a nice refresher and helps connect the dots to some of the newer technologies described later in the book.

There is also a well-documented Reference section at the end of the book with web sites for most of the information listed.

The Bottom Line

If the recent COVID-19 pandemic taught is anything, it’s that we have to be proactive when it comes to medicine. For all of the concerns people had about the safety of the vaccines developed so quickly, history is showing us that it was, in fact, safe.

But developing vaccines in weeks, instead of years, can’t be the exception. As we learn more about how the intersection of artificial intelligence and medicine can be used to improve medical outcomes, perhaps we will get to a place where we not only develop vaccines and cures more quickly, but may use those learning to prevent the illness in the first place.

The Future You currently has a 100% 5=Star rating and is available from Amazon.
